Your consumer unit - commonly called a fuse board - is the heart of your home's electrical system. It distributes power to every circuit in the property and, crucially, provides the protection that cuts off electricity in the event of a fault.

An old or inadequate consumer unit is one of the most common electrical safety issues in UK homes, and upgrading it is one of the most effective improvements you can make.

Older units that use rewirable fuses - or even early MCB boards without RCD protection - do not offer the level of protection that modern wiring regulations require.

A current consumer unit includes RCDs (residual current devices) which detect earth faults and cut off power in milliseconds, significantly reducing the risk of electric shock or fire. RCBO-equipped boards provide the same protection on an individual circuit basis, making them even more effective.
